April 7, 2014 — The West Haven School District is beginning the kindergarten registration process for the 2014-15 school year and is encouraging parents to schedule a kindergarten registration appointment and fill out an online application.

Kindergarten registration will be held at the Savin Rock Conference Center, 6 Rock St., in May. New kindergarten students, who must turn 5 on or before January 1, 2015, need to attend the registration appointment with their parents.

Parents should call the Board of Education office as soon as possible at 203-937-4300, extension 7130, to make a registration appointment. Those who speak Spanish can call 203-479-1495 to reach a Spanish-speaking staff member and make their appointment.

Appointments are available between 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. on May 7, May 9, May 14 and May 30. In an effort to accommodate schedules of parents who can’t attend during the day, there are also evening appointments from 4-8 p.m. on May 13 and May 20. All kindergarten registration appointments will have translators for various languages available.

Prior to their appointment, parents should fill out the online registration form, which can be found on the home page of They should also print out and bring a copy of the form to the appointment. If needed, computers are available at the public library. Those who need assistance in filling out the form or do not have printers should come a half-hour early to their registration appointment, and help will be available.

Parents should also gather required documents and bring them to their appointment. Such documents include a copy of their child’s most recent physical and immunization records, two proofs of residency (such as a copy of a lease, a mortgage statement or utility or phone bills from within the past two months), and the child’s birth certificate.

Children who are being registered will receive free and quick vision and hearing screenings with school nurses and meet with academic staff members for a brief skills assessment.

Each new kindergartener will also receive a free backpack containing school supplies and number and letter flashcards to help them get ready for school.

Depending on the date of a child’s birthday, some youngsters may not have had a physical for this year by the time they attend their registration appointment. However, a parent should still register their child in May.

Additionally, children who are going to attend a New Haven magnet school for kindergarten must still register with the West Haven School District.

“We’re excited to meet the newest group of West Haven students and to help them feel welcomed and at home in our school community,” said Judy Antignani, supervisor of Early Childhood Services for the school district. “We also hope to show parents the different services offered in our district, since representatives from the Family Resource Center and West Haven Community House will also be on site during registration days.”
